Parents of Performers (POP) is dedicated to enriching performing arts experience, both on stage and behind the scenes. We're committed to fostering family and community engagement that enhances the overall experience for all involved, extending the impact of the performing arts far beyond the confines of the stage.
In June of 2024, Jefferson Performing Arts (JPA) realized there was a need to continue involving parents and JPA alumni and so formed an exciting new organization called Parents of Performers (POP). POP 's formation was spearheaded by two JPA Alum parents, Allison DeViney & Amanda Stephens, and current performer parent, Katie Dunn.
“My daughter is newer to the JPA family, and I noticed that there weren’t enough opportunities for parents and families to engage beyond their child’s participation in a show. I was able to volunteer for one of their theater camp celebrations and loved being a part of the action!” Katie said. “It made me want to get further involved, and POP will give us a way to do that.”
All are welcome to join POP’s efforts! Whether it is volunteering for a committee, attending an event, or just remaining in touch with the theater community, POP has a place for everyone.
Studies have shown that participation in the arts supports social and emotional growth, which leads to improved cognitive, social, and behavioral outcomes for adolescents. Performing arts programs offer children and teens a platform to express themselves creatively, develop confidence, and cultivate important life skills. However, a crucial element of performing arts is often overlooked: parental involvement.
Amanda Stephens explained, “As a parent, seeing what a difference theatre can make in your child’s life is powerful. Watching them gain confidence, independence, and perseverance and make lifelong friendships is priceless. I want to be part of POP to support this for many families to come.”
Parents are the backbone of the youth theater community, and their involvement allows their children an increased sense of belonging and pride. Parents not only attend shows, but they also support by spreading the word, generating enthusiasm, and serving as key ambassadors across the community. They often help literally behind the scenes while volunteering backstage, sewing costumes, or corralling performers for the next scene. Rain or shine, they always show up.
“My oldest son grew up being involved in the Theatre Kids program. This program was important to our family and I wanted to stay involved” said Allison DeViney. “This is why a group of us started POP.”
From building community support to volunteering time and resources, POP involvement offers a variety of ways for parents, alumni, and the greater community to be part of the magic of the performing arts.
