(Metairie, Louisiana—April 24, 2024)— Open auditions for the upcoming fall 2024 JPAS production of School of Rock – The Musical will be held at East Jefferson High School auditorium in Metairie on Saturday, May 25 starting at 10:00 a.m. This time slot is for youth musicians who can “read” in the age range of 10-14.
JPAS is also seeking adult musicians to portray the lead roles of Dewey Finn and Ned Schneebly. Information can be found here with the full audition schedule, directions, instructions, and registration links: 47th Season Auditions: JPAS 47th Season Auditions (signupgenius.com). Please read all instructions carefully.
Based on the 2003 movie, School of Rock—The Musical tells the story of Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There, Dewey turns a class of straight-A pupils into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. But can Dewey get them to the “Battle of the Bands” without their parents and the school’s leadership finding out? With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the musical features 14 new songs and songs from the original movie.
For School of Rock, JPAS is also seeking young talent of 20 students approximately 10-14 years old who can sing, dance (move) and read lines. Four of these students must play instruments very well (keyboard, bass, drums, and lead guitar). These four positions (described in detail below) will be double cast. We ask these auditioners to bring and play their instruments at the auditions.
A drum set and keyboard plus amps for guitar and bass will be provided. Please bring your own drumsticks, electric bass, and electric guitar, and prepare 32 bars of your choosing to best display your instrumental skills.
All instrumentalists are asked to prepare an example of their best playing. For vocal auditions, we want to hear approximately 32 bars of their favorite song, so please bring sheet music in the correct key for the accompanist.
THE PRINCIPAL CHILD INSTRUMENTALIST ROLES ARE:
Onstage Guitar, Vocal Range A3-D5: Zack is the band’s lead guitarist and a talented songwriter. He desperately wants to impress his father, who’s usually too busy with work to take an interest in his family.
Onstage Piano/Keyboard, Vocal Range A3-D#5—Awkward and lacking in confidence, Lawrence is hesitant to attempt something “cool” like joining a band, but he soon turns out to be a fantastic keyboardist.
Onstage Bass Guitar, Vocal Range A3-D#5—Quiet and serious, Katie already played the cello but switched to bass at Dewey’s suggestion to fill out the band.
Onstage Drums, Range A3-D5—Freddie loves a bit of rowdiness and noise, making him a great drummer. His father doesn’t see his ability, constantly belittling his son.
There are additional principal roles for 6 girls and 3 boys who don’t play instruments as well as additional child ensemble members and adult cast members. Auditions for ADULT roles will be held at a later date.
